Are Crystals Even Useful?

Are they ever!

Crystals are not only incredibly beautiful to look at, but they are also useful healing tools that hold life force energy.

For thousands of years, ancient civilizations have practiced many healing traditions with the use of crystals and gemstones. Some cultures believed that when worn on the body, used in ceremony and ritual, or pulverized and rubbed onto the skin, crystals could protect from evil spirits and illness. Eastern cultures are among the first to have studied and practiced the medicinal and therapeutic use of crystals and gems. Evidence of this can be found in the early Indian Vedic texts as well as in traditional Chinese Medicine texts. Ancient Egyptians decorated their bodies in jewelry made of stones such as lapis lazuli, carnelian, and quartz, they also crushed malachite into powder form to be used as cosmetics. Even more fascinating, Egyptians used crystals in the making of the pyramids and to shift energetic states during their sacred burial rites. And of course, healers from the Indigenous cultures of the Americas, Australia, and India have used crystals in ceremonies and rituals to heal and connect with the spirits of souls and the elemental spirits of nature. Many of these historical traditions are being remembered and resurfacing in a modern-day culture currently.

Using crystals intentionally for energy shifting and healing is not just a trend, but a deep-seated tradition that has held up against modern modalities for many years.

Crystals In Everyday Modern Life

Crystals are scientifically known to hold energy - energy strong enough to conduct electricity! In the late 1800’s French Physicist, Pierre Curie, discovered Piezoelectricity by applying mechanical pressure to certain stones and they could then generate electricity (mechanical energy discharge method). To this day, quartz is used to conduct electricity in technologies such as LED lights, radios, and computers, and to keep time on our watches.

In more recent years, Marcel Vogel, researcher and patent agent of 27 years for IBM, who studied ether physics and the foundations and the makeup of crystals discovered that their structure matches that of the tree of life in Kabbalah mystery teachings, which mirrors the structure of human DNA. The design of each crystal holds life force energy in the form of negative ions. Vogel is quoted as saying, “the crystal is a neutral object whose inner structure exhibits a crystalline state of perfection and balance. When it is precisely cut to the proper geometric form and when the human mind enters into a relationship with its structural perfection, in the vibration of love, the crystal emits a vibration which extends and amplifies the power and grasp of the user’s mind.” He then went on to develop the vogal-shaped crystal which is pointed at each end. This shape is meant to enhance the crystal's ability to amplify the mind's intentions and thoughts.

How To Choose Your Crystals

Each and every crystal is believed to hold a specific vibration. Most crystals' energetic qualities fall within two categories: either they amplify the intention and energy with which they connect or they can hold more grounding and absorbing energy. Commonly crystals with lighter, brighter colours and more translucent shades hold amplifying cosmic energy. While darker, earthy, and opaque shades most often hold a grounding, absorbing, energy.

Ultimately, the best way to choose a crystal that is right for you is to listen to your intuition and choose one that you feel drawn to. A crystal is as unique as you are and therefore may carry a different feel or meaning for each individual working with it.

Based on the two overarching categories (amplifying intention and grounding energy), two crystals I often recommend for practical daily rituals are:

Spirit Quartz: Raising Your Cosmic Connection to Spirit

Spirit Quartz carries a high dimensional frequency while also being directly connected to mother earth. It serves to amplify your own vibration to higher levels while connecting you to nature. A beautiful crystal for connecting to elemental spirits and spirits of higher realms including your own highest consciousness.

Qualities: ancient wisdom, harmony, higher-self

Obsidian: Grounding Your Grief

Obsidian is made of hardened volcanic lava, referred to as volcanic glass. Sharp and powerful, strong enough to withstand the scorching heat of the center of the earth - my absolute favorite stone for grounding the chaotic energy of grief. Pull yourself deep within, remembering the feeling of being safe in the womb.

Qualities: protection, grounding, transmutation

What I’ve Come to Really Appreciate About Crystals

Apart from how beautiful they are, and beyond their ability to work with my own unique intentions, are the similarities between crystals and humans and where lies the true beauty in all things…

Like humans, crystals have their own unique structural blueprint which is based on sacred geometry principles. According to Ph.D. Physicist and Author, Dr. Theresa Bullard, “sacred geometry is the expression of divine energies within the physical form.” You can see geometrical shapes and patterns absolutely everywhere in nature, including in our own human bodies.

Although we are all structured in the same way, we - like crystals - experience distortions from the perfect form, which create our uniqueness!

Let’s talk about distortions…back to the piezoelectric crystals. Piezo has a Greek root meaning of “pressure or to push/press on” and as mentioned earlier it is the pressure that is put on certain crystals that creates this electric energy. When the perfect lattice structure of the crystal is squeezed into an imperfect form, causing structural defects, a burst of energy is released. Not only is the energy created from these “defects” but so are their unique characteristics. It is these impurities within each crystal structure that causes differences in color, giving each its own wonderful appearance. The pressure causes differences in growth, shape, and size also creating natural beauty and uniqueness.

Perhaps to live and grow here on this third-dimensional earth, we simply must experience some form of pressure, discomfort, and distortion to truly appreciate the beauty of life. I believe it is the uniqueness of each crystal that showcases its truest beauty and I think the same of humans. It really is our differences that hold our truest forms of expression; our individual forms of expression are where each of our deepest, most beautiful life purposes await.
